Waste is a hot topic right now. The average UK household produces more than a tonne of it per year and the national bins are overflowing.  More people are recycling than ever before but less than half of our waste gets recycled and we're still dumping over 6m tonnes of waste into landfills every year. While recycling rates may have improved, we are still throwing 8. 9 million tons of rubbish into landfill every year (out of our total of 13 million tons). In fact, Estonia has us beat in terms of recycling with 53. 7% to our 27%. Our recycling rate is also still behind that of countries including Germany with 42. 7%, and even megapoor Malawi which has a 37. 8% rate. Hardly surprising then that recycling rates continue to stagnate we really need to stop sending our waste to landfill; and instead find innovative ways of making use of it.

New statistics from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) on recycling rates show that in 2017 we recycled 44 per cent of our total waste, compared to just 42 per cent in 2016. We lag behind countries such as Luxembourg, which recycled 52 per cent of its waste last year, as well as Germany, which recycled around 56 percent. The UK has made some positive steps forward in heading down the road to becoming a sustainable society.

We have banned microbeads, tackled plastic bag use and are taking the transportation of plastic waste to more sustainable locations, which all helps to make our world a cleaner place. Recycling means a lot of different things to a lot of different people, and this article will give you some information on this topic.
