Is It Ok To Take Waste Produce From Supermarket Skips
Sainsbury’s are reportedly contributing to increased food waste and supermarket Skip Hire UK with one day sell by dates. From avoiding wasting food and saving money to cooking up a meal from scratch, supermarkets are now selling discounted food that could have been eaten. The programme found that more than 70% of socalled ‘wonky’ or short shelf life products were being wasted, often because the supermarkets found it impractical or uneconomical to sell items with a day or two left until they would be no longer fit for consumption.
Waste Produce
I don’t know why it took me so long to take a British supermarket Skip Hire UK survey and write this blog post. All the boring data collection and analysis I did for my PhD got the better of me and I just couldn’t find the inspiration to carry on analyzing supermarket data! What finally spurred me into action was a scavenging mission sent me by London Fields bakery and Hackney Council teaming up with Sainsbury’s (a major UK supermarket chain) to deliver surplus food that are destined for waste to local charities and projects.
To Skip Or Not To Skip Is The Question
I’ve always believed that if you want to change the world, you need to start at home. To make a real difference – however big or small – you have to start with yourself. So when I read about the food waste scandal in the UK last year (1), I felt compelled to start acting on my own. Every month, grocery stores in the UK throw away about 5 million tons of produce (2). After searching high and low in the Sainsbury’s skip behind my house, I see some really good stuff that would otherwise be sent to landfill.
I buy vegetable sold by the Biff, cakes still in their wrapper. In many ways, I’m just an ordinary person looking for highquality food at a great price. Many people foraging for food from supermarket Skip Hire UK finds themselves on the sharp end of health issues when it is found that the Sainsbury’s products they have been eating has actually gone off, some even make the news. I was stunned today to find a young man in his early twenties going through the Skip Hire UK of Sainsbury’s of all places, and returning goods to the store with a trolley.
I have not seen or heard of anyone being prosecuted for taking food from a supermarket skip. This is because Sainsbury's does not actually own the food until it has been bought from a supplier and put on their shelves. You don't own the food product either, you have purchased it on a whim, and now you get to enjoy it for an amount of days, or hours until you consume the product. A day after this time it is indeed illegal to dump the food into Sainsbury's bin but most people seem happy enough to throw away perfectly good food on their front grey bin (or in other words your local councils flytip site), in fact people are happy to 'dump' their household rubbish there as well.
Sainsbury’s (company) is the second largest chain of supermarkets in the United Kingdom, with a 14. 9% share of the retail market. Founded by Joseph Sainsbury in 1869, the company became a wholly owned subsidiary of the Walmartowned ASDA Group in 1994, and merged with ASDA on 17 March 2018 to form Sainsbury’s ASDA Group plc. This Online article gave me an idea about how supermarkets disposed their food waste away. So I decided to take my chances by seeing if any supermarket waste had been stripped.
I have a strong suspicion that no matter how many wasteful actions Sainsbury’s engages in, they are unlikely to be stripped of their lucrative retail space. We’ve all done it at least once when visiting Supermarket. You go to the checkout and see some products have a one day sellby date, and you wonder if it is still safe to eat those products. I’ve written about how supermarkets are exploiting food waste. They buy overstocked food that is nearing its best by date and sell it to you at half price.
I’m aware the supermarkets have a habit of best before dates, etc, that are approaching or have expended. If you are pushed for cash and need food, then don’t do it? I work with plenty of people, some of whom get no money from benefits, parttime jobs etc. Those who come to your door will let you take as much perishable items but what will they do when they find out the cereal and bags of rice etc are heavy with maggots? Do not trust nor rely on your local food banks; they generally go in for tinned foods and pastas too.
There is really nothing wrong in taking waste supermarket goods; it’s a shame that there are so many people who. As most of us have probably seen on social media or online in some form, a large supermarket is currently being criticised for wasting close to one million pounds worth of food from its chilled fruit and veg section. The thing about the food on display is that it’s perfectly fine to eat but has been limited by the supermarket due to expiring within one day.
Now, some people see this as the retailer simply getting rid of stock before it expires; while others see it as a way to make the consumer buy that bit more — which ultimately keeps the company’s profit margins higher. When you think of a skip, you might think of an unsightly mess that you really do not want in your neighbourhood. But when it comes to the trash and waste littering supermarket Skip Hire UK, the question is a lot more complicated than just “yes or no”.
